The Lake of Vouglans may not be as popular as Paris or the French Riviera, but if you enjoy the beauty of Nature and the relaxing atmosphere of an afternoon on the water, it is certainly worth seeing!

Located about 1.5 hrs northeast of Lyon, Vouglans is a reservoir named after one of the villages that was sacrificed when the flood gates of the new hydro dam were closed in 1968. Since then, Vouglans has become a small paradise for local fishermen and tourists alike.

Following the meandering valley of the Ain river, on which the dam was built, we have spent many days on these turquoise waters. Early in the morning to get to the best fishing spots, or simply enjoying a leisurely boat ride with our friends and family in the afternoon. We have also heard countless fisherman tales there that may or may not be suitable for this blog!

Growing up in Lacanche, less than two hours from Vouglans and the Jura region, we would often go there to enjoy long week-ends and holidays around the lake and discover the other local wonders of the region. From artisanal cheeses to spectacular cross-country ski trails in the winter and splendid lakes and rivers in the summer, Jura is a wonderful place to visit for the nature lover who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities!
