Pumpkin Swirl Chocolate Brownies

The first cool days of autumn make turning on the oven feel especially inviting. These Pumpkin Swirl Brownies lean into that feeling, bringing together rich chocolate, warm spice, and pumpkin in a dessert that feels distinctly seasonal without straying too far from a classic.

The brownie batter begins with butter and chocolate melted together until dark and glossy. Brown sugar adds a deeper sweetness, while cocoa powder intensifies the chocolate without taking away from the dense, fudgy texture. It is rich enough to stand on its own, but even better against the spiced pumpkin running through it.

For the swirl, cream cheese and pumpkin are blended until smooth, then sweetened with maple syrup and seasoned with pumpkin spice and vanilla. The result is creamy and gently spiced, with just enough tang from the cream cheese to balance the richness of the chocolate.

Most of the brownie batter is spread into the pan before generous spoonfuls of pumpkin are added, followed by the remaining chocolate batter. A skewer drawn through the layers creates ribbons of dark chocolate and golden pumpkin, making every brownie a little different from the next.

In the oven, the edges set while the centre stays dense and fudgy. A scattering of flaky sea salt as the brownies come out sharpens the chocolate and balances their sweetness. Then comes perhaps the most difficult part of the recipe: waiting for them to cool before slicing.

Cut into generous squares, these brownies strike a balance between familiar and unexpected: irresistably chocolatey, softly spiced and streaked with creamy pumpkin. Serve them as they are, or with a spoonful of crème fraîche or softly whipped cream for something a little more indulgent.

They are an easy bake for an autumn afternoon, equally suited to a casual gathering or simply left on the counter to disappear one square at a time. A little pumpkin, a lot of chocolate, and a very good reason to turn on the oven.

Pumpkin Swirl Chocolate Brownies

Prep: 10 minutes

Cook: 30 minutes

Total time: 40 minutes

Yield: Serves 4

Ingredients:

Pumpkin Swirl

  • ½ cup (115 g) cream cheese, softened
  • ¾ cup (180 g) pure pumpkin purée
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • ½ tbsp pumpkin spice
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Brownie Batter

  • 250 g salted butter
  • 300 g chocolate chips
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
  • ⅔ cup all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • Flaky sea salt, for finishing

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter an 8-inch square baking pan and line with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on two sides for easy removal.
  2. Make the pumpkin swirl. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the pumpkin purée and mix until well combined. Stir in the maple syrup, pumpkin spice, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Set aside.
  3. Make the brownie batter. Melt the butter and chocolate together in a medium saucepan over low to medium-low heat, stirring frequently until smooth. Remove from the heat and whisk in the brown sugar and vanilla. Add the eggs and whisk until smooth and glossy. Fold in the cocoa powder, flour, and salt just until combined.
  4. Pour about three-quarters of the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Dollop the pumpkin mixture over top, followed by spoonfuls of the remaining brownie batter. Using a skewer or chopstick, gently swirl the two batters together, taking care not to overmix.
  5. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the edges are set and a tester inserted into the brownie portion near the centre comes out with moist crumbs rather than wet batter.
  6. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and cool in the pan for 20 minutes. Using the parchment overhang, carefully lift the brownies from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes:

  • Pumpkin purée: Use pure pumpkin purée rather than pumpkin pie filling, which contains added sugar and spices.
  • For a defined swirl: Avoid overmixing when swirling the batters. A few deliberate passes with a skewer or chopstick will create more distinct ribbons of pumpkin and chocolate.
  • For clean slices: Allow the brownies to cool completely before cutting. For especially neat edges, chill the brownies briefly and wipe the knife clean between cuts.
  • Storage: Store the brownies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Bring to room temperature before serving for the best texture.
