{"id":1231,"date":"2015-12-07T13:31:58","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T20:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/testblog.french-barn.com\/?p=1231"},"modified":"2016-01-08T12:22:48","modified_gmt":"2016-01-08T19:22:48","slug":"tasting-the-stars-champagne-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/french-barn.com\/blog\/travel\/tasting-the-stars-champagne-region","title":{"rendered":"Tasting the stars: Visiting the Champagne region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;Come quickly \u2013 I\u2019m tasting stars!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 Dom P\u00e9rignon, the Benedictine monk wrongly credited with inventing champagne, was definitely onto something. \u00a0A few days in the Champagne region, just east of Paris will confirm this for you.<\/p>\n<p>Wine has been produced in the Champagne region of north-eastern France for centuries; however, the wine we now know and love as Champagne was not produced until the late 17<sup>th<\/sup> century.\u00a0 It was during this time that winemakers (who had been trying hard to develop techniques which would improve their wines\u2019 flavour and reduce their effervescence) stopped despairing over their \u201cfrothy\u201d wine and embraced the bubbles.\u00a0 Thank goodness because this was the start of the Champagne-producing industry we know today!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1234\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1234\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/testblog.french-barn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Vineyards-around-Champagne.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1234\" src=\"http:\/\/testblog.french-barn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Vineyards-around-Champagne.jpg\" alt=\"champagne vineyards\" width=\"800\" height=\"1205\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vineyards around Champagne<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in finding out more about Champagne production, you should definitely put the Champagne region on the top of your \u201cmust visit in France\u201d list.\u00a0 Reims, one of two main commercial centres for Champagne production, is a quick and easy train trip from Paris\u2019 <em>Gare de l\u2019Est<\/em> (around 45 minutes) but if you really want to get out and explore, you\u2019re best to rent a car on arrival in Reims.\u00a0 If you prefer to rent the car in Paris, know that the Gare de Lyon is close to the <em>P\u00e9ripherique<\/em>, making for a relatively easy exit from Paris onto the motorway. It\u2019s a good idea to make sure you have at least two authorized drivers who can take turns being the designated driver during your travels around Champagne country, so make sure you organize that when you pick up the car.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/testblog.french-barn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9442.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1241\" src=\"http:\/\/testblog.french-barn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9442.jpg\" alt=\"Veuve Cliquot vineyard\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Visiting the Champagne houses around Reims and Epernay does necessitate some planning and I recommend you make enquiries about each establishment\u2019s opening hours in advance by phone, don\u2019t just trust the websites. Many of the houses require advance bookings or only have tours leaving at specific times and, especially over the summer, they close for a number of hours over the lunch period. \u00a0There are only a few places where you do not have to take a tour, so by the end of a few of them, you will most likely be able to recite some of the information by heart!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1242\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1242\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/testblog.french-barn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9490.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1242\" src=\"http:\/\/testblog.french-barn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9490.jpg\" alt=\"Tasting Mercier Champagne\" width=\"800\" height=\"1205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/french-barn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9490.jpg 800w, https:\/\/french-barn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9490-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/french-barn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9490-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/french-barn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9490-330x497.jpg 330w, https:\/\/french-barn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9490-690x1039.jpg 690w, https:\/\/french-barn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_9490-385x580.jpg 385w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A consommer avec moderation!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Most tours begin with a presentation of the house itself (many fancy video advertorials), followed by a visit to the cellars where the Champagne-making process is explained in detail.\u00a0 In the cellars, the temperature runs around 12\u02daC so make sure to bring a sweater! The \u201ctastings\u201d referred to at the end of each tour are not tastings proper where you compare different Champagnes (there <strong>are<\/strong> houses which offer this but you\u2019ll pay extra) &#8211; they are full-sized glasses of Champagne (hence the need for a designated driver). After a day visiting Champagne houses, never mind tasting the stars, you might be seeing a few too!<\/p>\n<p>For something a bit different, you might want to consider heading a little further afield to seek out the lesser-known <em>Ros\u00e9 des Riceys<\/em>. \u00a0Les Riceys, the <strong>only village in Champagne to have three A.O.C. labels (<em>Champagne<\/em>, <em>Coteaux Champenois<\/em> and <em>Ros\u00e9 de Riceys)<\/em> is <\/strong>located in the Aube <em>d\u00e9partement<\/em> in the Champagne region. This area produces the famous ros\u00e9 wine, made from a single grape variety \u2013 Pinot Noir \u2013 and is one of the few ros\u00e9 wines that can age.\u00a0 Considered one of the best ros\u00e9s in France and said to be the preferred wine of <em>Le Roi Soleil,<\/em> Louis XIV, it\u2019s definitely worth checking out and makes a nice change from champagne!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For a list
